Old Time Camp Meeting cover

Old Time Camp Meeting is a gospel album by the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys, released by King Records as King 750 in April 1962. All twelve songs were recorded at King’s studio in Cincinnati on 7 and 8 February 1961. Carter Stanley played guitar, Ralph Stanley banjo, Curley Lambert mandolin, Vernon Derrick fiddle and Chick Stripling bass.

Carter sang lead on every track but one, with Ralph on tenor. The exception is “Working on a Building,” where Ralph took the lead on the verses and Carter led the chorus. Half the songs are quartets, with Lambert singing baritone and Derrick bass: “Old Country Church,” “Somebody Touched Me,” “Mother Call My Name in Prayer,” “Campin’ in Canaan Land,” “My Sinful Past” and “Kneel at the Cross.” “Little Bessie,” “Mother’s Only Sleeping” and Ralph’s “Village Church Yard” are duets by the brothers alone.

The brothers wrote three of the songs: Ralph wrote “A Few More Years” and “Village Church Yard,” and Carter wrote “My Sinful Past.” “Mother’s Only Sleeping” is credited to Bill Monroe, “I’m Dying a Sinner’s Death” to Roy Acuff, and “Kneel at the Cross” to Charles Moody. “Old Country Church,” “Campin’ in Canaan Land” and “Little Bessie” are traditional.
