Old Time Music at Newport, released by Vanguard Records in 1964, gathers performances from the 1963 Newport Folk Festival's old-time music workshops and concerts — a moment when the festival's folk revivalists were turning serious attention to the traditional southern musicians who had inspired them. Doc Watson is one of several artists featured; the LP includes contributions from Clarence "Tom" Ashley, Doc Boggs, Maybelle Carter, Jenes Cottrell, Dorsey Dixon, Clint Howard, and Fred Price alongside Watson's own performances. The recordings catch Watson early in his crossover from local North Carolina figure to nationally known performer, his guitar playing already astonishing in the company of his elders. The festival material would be reissued in larger compilations later, but the original LP remains a primary document of the moment.
