Old Time is a 2014 self-released album by the Lonesome Ace Stringband, a Toronto-based Canadian trio comprising Chris Coole (banjo, vocals), John Showman (fiddle, vocals), and Max Heineman (double bass, vocals). The group grew from old-time music sessions and brunch performances at Toronto's Dakota Tavern, developing into one of Canada's foremost ensembles in the pre-bluegrass Appalachian string band tradition. Coole, a widely respected clawhammer banjo player and instructor in the Canadian folk and old-time community, anchors a sound rooted in the pre-commercial mountain repertoire that fed into bluegrass without belonging to it. The album presents traditional songs and tunes performed in the spare, unadorned style of the pre-war string band era that inspired the trio's formation.
