On Down the Line (Compass 7 4634-2) was released on 22 July 2014 and is Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper’s first album for Compass Records, after five albums on Rounder. A nine-time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year by then, Cleveland recorded it with the band alone, without outside guest artists: Josh Richards on guitar and lead vocals, Nathan Livers on mandolin and tenor vocals, Glenn Gibson on banjo and dobro, and Tyler Griffith on bass. Jeff White and Cleveland produced it, and most of the sessions were at Compass Sound Studio in Nashville.
Richards wrote “Come Along Jody,” an instrumental, and co-wrote “The Sunny Side of Town” with Todd Alan Rakestraw. Other songs include Julian Lennon’s “Too Late for Goodbyes,” which opens the album, Mark “Brink” Brinkman’s “Fiddlin’ Joe,” and “When the Warden Turns the Key,” and Cleveland closes with an instrumental “The Orange Blossom Special.” Cleveland plays an eight-string fiddle on “Me and My Fiddle,” which Gibson sings, and Dale Ann Bradley sings a harmony part on “The Sunny Side of Town.”
