“Come Along Jody” is a fiddle tune written by Tex Logan, the Texas-born fiddler and MIT-trained engineer who moved between the worlds of bluegrass music and science. Logan composed a handful of tunes that entered the bluegrass repertoire, and this is among them.
The tune is nominally in the key of A, but it draws much of its character from blue notes — the flatted third and seventh — which give it a modal, slightly unsettled quality and a melody full of unexpected turns. That distinctive harmonic flavor has kept it a favorite on the contemporary jam and festival circuit.
This recording features Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper, who included it on their album “On Down the Line” as a salute to Tex Logan, opening the tune with a fiddle-and-mandolin duet.
