On Praying Ground, released by Sugar Hill Records in 1990 (SH-CD-3779), is Doc Watson's bluegrass-gospel album from his Sugar Hill years — produced by T. Michael Coleman and featuring Sam Bush on mandolin, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Stuart Duncan on fiddle/mandolin/guitar, and Roland White on guitar supporting Watson's flatpicking and warm Carolina baritone. The program runs through traditional sacred material delivered with the unhurried respect Watson brought to every song he sang. At the 1991 Grammy Awards the album won Best Traditional Folk Album — Watson's seventh Grammy, and the recognition of an artist whose entire late career sat firmly in the traditional folk-and-country territory the category honored.
