On the Boulevard, New Grass Revival's sixth studio album and first on Sugar Hill (1984), introduced the rebuilt lineup that would carry the band through the rest of its run — Sam Bush and John Cowan now joined by Béla Fleck on banjo and Pat Flynn on guitar, after the departures of Curtis Burch and Courtney Johnson. Fleck's instrumentals Metric Lips, Seven by Seven, and Big Foot announced his arrival as a compositional voice; Flynn contributed Do What You Gotta Do and the title track. The album includes a memorable bluegrass reworking of Bob Marley's One Love / People Get Ready and runs without drums — four musicians plus a comfortable Sugar Hill recording budget. It marked the start of New Grass's most musically ambitious period.
