On the South Bound, released in 1972 on RCA Victor (US LSP-4688; UK LSA 3132), is the second of three RCA Flatt-and-Wiseman pairings. Lester Flatt and Mac Wiseman share lead vocals and guitar with Josh Graves on Dobro, Roland White on mandolin, Haskell McCormick on banjo, Howdy Forrester and Paul Warren on fiddle, Cousin Jake Tullock on bass, Vic Jordan on banjo, and Nashville session players Jerry Carrigan on drums and Hargus "Pig" Robbins on piano. Earl Scruggs also appears as a guest. The arrangements bring a Nashville-bluegrass hybrid feel — light drums and piano underneath the duet vocals. The record is one of the earliest mainstream bluegrass releases to openly use a full drum kit alongside the traditional five-piece, reflecting RCA's countrypolitan house style of the era.
