On the South Bound is the second of three albums Lester Flatt and Mac Wiseman recorded for RCA Victor. It was issued in June 1972 as LSP-4688 in the United States and as LSA 3132 in the United Kingdom. Most of it was recorded on 19 and 20 October 1971 at RCA Victor Studio in Nashville, with Bob Ferguson and Jack Clement producing; “How Lonely Can You Get” had been recorded in March 1971 at the sessions for the duo’s first album together. RCA released “Salty Dog Blues” with “Mama’s and Daddy’s Little Girl” as a single in February 1972, and “Me and Your Memory” with “On the Southbound” in June 1972.
Flatt and Wiseman sing the leads and play guitar. Rhythm guitar comes from Howard Johnson on 19 October and Johnny Johnson on 20 October, with Josh Graves on Dobro, Roland White on mandolin, Haskel McCormick on banjo, Howdy Forrester and Paul Warren on fiddle, Don Smith on bass, Hargus Robbins on piano and Jerry Carrigan on drums.
The songs include “Salty Dog Blues” by Wiley and Zeke Morris, Flatt’s “Mama’s and Daddy’s Little Girl,” Wiseman’s “Just a Strand from a Yellow Curl” and “Are You Coming Back to Me,” the Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt song “When You Are Lonely,” “You Can’t Trust a Friend Anymore” by Flatt and Tom T. Hall, and the title song by Allen Reynolds and Dickey Lee.
