Originalist (615 Hideaway Records HID 575, 2019) is the third Audie Blaylock and Redline album, released on a new label with a refreshed lineup — Evan Ward, Reed Jones, and Mason Wright joining Blaylock — and a title that makes the band's aesthetic position explicit. An originalist in the bluegrass context signals fidelity to the genre's founding conventions: acoustic instruments, traditional harmony singing, and the tempos and textures established by Bill Monroe and his contemporaries. Blaylock's position within this aesthetic debate has been consistent across his recording career, and the 615 Hideaway release marks a continuation of that commitment through a decade of band activity and multiple lineup iterations. The album's direct approach and the tightness of the new lineup's ensemble playing reflect a band still developing its sound within a deliberately constrained — and deliberately principled — aesthetic framework.
