Papertown (Mountain Home MH-14042, 2012) is a Balsam Range album and one of the landmark recordings of contemporary bluegrass — winner of the IBMA Album of the Year award and a record that spent five consecutive months at number one on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart. The western North Carolina quintet of Buddy Melton, Marc Pruett, Caleb Smith, Tim Surrett, and Darren Nicholson performs a program of original material and well-chosen covers that balances traditional bluegrass values with the clean Mountain Home production approach that had defined the band's sound since their debut. Papertown marked a commercial and critical high-water mark for a band that had developed steadily since forming in Haywood County, North Carolina; the IBMA recognition placed them among the most celebrated mainstream-traditional acts of the early 2010s. Catalog personnel data for this album may contain entries from other Balsam Range recordings and should be verified against the liner notes.
