Paul's Creek is a self-released album from the Western North Carolina string band of the same name, built around a community of acoustic musicians rooted in the old-time fiddle tradition of Madison County and the surrounding Appalachian region. Carol Rifkin plays guitar and sings; Troy Harrison plays banjo; Arvil Freeman plays fiddle; Tim Gardner plays fiddle; and Jamie Soesbee holds the bass and contributes vocals. The ensemble draws from the Southern Appalachian dance-tune and ballad tradition — two fiddlers, banjo, guitar, and bass providing the instrumentation of the mountain string band — with the communal sensibility of a group more concerned with the music's social function than with concert performance or studio production. Rifkin, a recipient of the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Award for her contributions to traditional mountain music, anchors a gathering of musicians with deep shared roots in the Western North Carolina fiddle community.
