Pretty Green Hills was released by Rebel on June 27, 2006 (REB-CD 1812) and recorded at Tom T. and Dixie Hall’s studio in Tennessee. Dave Evans plays banjo and guitar and sings lead. Bo Isaac sings tenor and a high baritone and fiddles on “Cora Is Gone,” and Mike Garris plays bass and sings baritone. Merl Johnson (bass, guitar, mandolin and fiddle) and Randy Thomas (guitar and mandolin) are also credited, Dave Miner plays Dobro on three tracks, and Bobby Hicks, who was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2017, plays fiddle.
The arrangements vary from trios to a solo: “Should I Go or Should I Stay,” an Evans original, has only his guitar and voice, while “East Virginia Blues” is played without guitar. The album opens with Carter Stanley’s “Our Last Goodbye” and includes the title song by Tom T. and Dixie Hall, Tom T. Hall’s “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died,” Lester Flatt’s “Head Over Heels,” the instrumental “Soldier’s Joy” and a second Evans original, “Down and Out Again.”
