Prisoner in Disguise

Linda Ronstadt

Album · 1975 · Asylum 7E-1045

Prisoner in Disguise is Linda Ronstadt’s sixth solo album and her second for Asylum Records, released in September 1975 (Asylum 7E-1045). Peter Asher produced it, and it was recorded at the Sound Factory in Los Angeles between February and June 1975. The musicians include Andrew Gold, Kenny Edwards, Russ Kunkel, Dan Dugmore and, on several tracks, David Lindley on fiddle.

Ronstadt chose songs by friends and fellow writers — James Taylor, Lowell George, J.D. Souther and Anna McGarrigle — along with Neil Young’s “Love Is a Rose,” Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross” and Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” “Heat Wave” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its B-side, “Love Is a Rose,” reached No. 5 on the country singles chart. “The Sweetest Gift,” written by James B. Coats, features Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals and acoustic guitar, David Grisman on mandolin, Glen Hardin on piano and Lindley on fiddle. The album reached No. 4 on the Billboard album chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
