Puttin’ New Roots Down

IIIrd Tyme Out

Album · 1993 · Rebel REB 1703

Puttin' New Roots Down, released on Rebel in 1993, is an early studio album from IIIrd Tyme Out, the band Russell Moore had founded two years earlier and was quickly building into one of the most decorated vocal groups in traditional bluegrass. The record shows the group's gift for drawing on country and bluegrass history and locating the harmony-centered core in each song. Moore's clear, powerful lead anchors arrangements whose multi-part harmony stacks are assembled with the precision that became the band's hallmark. Coming on the heels of their 1991 debut, it confirmed that the group's early promise was no accident — the singing tight, the material well-chosen, the ensemble already operating at a high level. The album helped set IIIrd Tyme Out on the path to repeated IBMA vocal-group honors and a long run as a standard-bearer for the traditional style.
