Quicksilver Rides Again, released by Sugar Hill in 1982 (SH-3727), brought Doyle Lawson and his band back to secular bluegrass after the gospel success of the previous year's Rock My Soul. The lineup — Lawson on mandolin, Jimmy Haley on guitar, Terry Baucom on banjo, Lou Reid (Pyrtle) on bass — works through eleven tracks ranging across the contemporary bluegrass songbook, with guest contributions from Sam Bush on fiddle and Jerry Douglas and Mike Auldridge on dobro. The melodic picking and four-part harmony Quicksilver had built into a signature remain at the center, but the secular material gave the band wider range than the gospel projects allowed. The album consolidated Quicksilver's standing as one of the most influential bluegrass acts of the early 1980s.
