Ramblin' Jack Elliott (Prestige International INT 13033, 1962) is among the most significant American folk records of its era, produced by Kenneth S. Goldstein and recorded shortly after Elliott ended a six-year self-imposed European exile. Elliott (vocals, guitar, harmonica) is joined by John Herald (guitar) and Ralph Rinzler (mandolin) on several tracks. The twelve songs draw from traditional folk, cowboy, and blues material — including "San Francisco Bay Blues," "Candyman," and "Tramp on the Street" — and the album was called Elliott's "finest American recording" by critic Paul Nelson. It captures Elliott at the moment he re-entered the New York folk revival, mentoring a young Bob Dylan as the album was taking shape, and was later reissued on Fantasy as part of the Hard Travelin' double LP.
