Rattle of the Chains (Pinecastle PRC 1148) was released in late September 2005, Wildfire’s third album for Pinecastle after Uncontained (2001) and Where Roads Divide (2003). It is dedicated to the memory and the music of Jimmy Martin. Phil Leadbetter (dobro and vocals), Darrell Webb (mandolin and vocals), Robert Hale (guitar and vocals), Curt Chapman (bass) and Barry Crabtree (banjo) have more than 100 years of playing experience between them, and all but Crabtree had played in J.D. Crowe & the New South before forming the band about five years earlier.

The album has twelve songs. Hale wrote three of them, including “In Our Hearts,” written for his father, who died in 2000, and the others come from Nashville writers, among them Tom T. Hall (“Ballad of Forty Dollars”), Harley Allen (“All in God’s Plan”) and Jerry Salley (“The Blame”). The title comes from a line in “I Wouldn’t Mind the Shackles,” written by Darryl Worley. Scott Vestal produced and engineered the record at his home studio, where Leadbetter had recorded his solo album Slide Effects earlier that year.
