Red Dog Run (self-released, 2014) is the debut recording from the Ithaca, New York quartet built around Richie Stearns, the banjoist and singer best known for his long tenure with the Horse Flies. The band — Stearns with vocalist Rosie Newton, guitarist Jim Miller, and bassist Jed Greenberg — draws on old-time, bluegrass, and folk repertoire, performing pieces from "Waterbound" to "Hills of Mexico" with the loose-limbed collective energy Stearns developed through years in the Horse Flies' genre-blending ensemble. Produced by Dave Cook, the album captures a working quartet at home in the contradance and roots-revival circuit of the northeastern United States, combining traditional material with the personality of musicians who arrived at the old-time repertoire through multiple paths.
