Restless Rambling Heart, released in 1986 on Flying Fish (FF 406), is Laurie Lewis's solo debut. Lewis (fiddle/vocals) co-produced the record with Tim O'Brien, who plays guitar and mandolin, with Greg Townsend on guitar and a roster of Bay Area sidemen filling out the arrangements. Joe Goldmark adds pedal steel and Markie Sanders sings. The set blends old-timey textures with contemporary bluegrass and folk, anchored by seven Lewis originals. The session was tracked at Dave Wellhausen's San Francisco studio. The album launched Lewis's career as a touring bandleader and songwriter after years of work in Bay Area string-band circles with the Good Ol' Persons and the Grant Street String Band — the moment she stepped out on her own name.
