Album · 1999 · Rounder C 0450

Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pedersen is the second album by Tony Rice, Larry Rice, Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, released by Rounder on 5 October 1999 (Rounder 11661-0450-2). It followed Out of the Woodwork (1997) and was followed by Running Wild (2001). Hillman and Pedersen had been friends and musical partners since their teens in California, and they met Tony and Larry Rice at a show in Pasadena in 1963; Hillman and Pedersen later worked together in the Desert Rose Band.

Tony Rice plays guitar and Larry Rice mandolin. Pedersen plays banjo on most tracks and guitar on a few, and Hillman plays mandolin on several tracks. Rickie Simpkins is the fiddler, Fred Travers plays Dobro, and Ronnie Simpkins plays bass, with Bill Bryson on bass for “One of These Days.” The singing is split among the three: Hillman leads “Doesn’t Mean That Much Anymore,” Pedersen “Never Ending Song of Love,” and Larry Rice “Friend of the Devil,” the Dawson, Garcia and Hunter song. Hillman wrote “Doesn’t Mean That Much Anymore,” “Moment of Glory,” “I Will” and “The Walkin’ Blues.” Bill Wolf produced and mastered the record, and Jon Weisberger wrote the liner notes.
