Rising Fawn Gathering

Norman and Nancy Blake

Album · 2009

Rising Fawn Gathering is a studio album from Norman Blake and Nancy Blake, the married duo whose extended musical partnership produced one of the most sustained bodies of work in American acoustic folk and old-time music, recorded in the spirit of the gathering-place sessions that both performers favor over formal studio production. Norman Blake plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and sings; Nancy Blake plays cello and sings. Rising Fawn — the small northeastern Georgia community where the Blakes make their home — provides both the album's title and its geographic and spiritual context, the music rooted in the Appalachian and Southeastern folk tradition that surrounds it. The album documents the Blakes in the unhurried, conversational performance mode that characterizes their best work together: deeply traditional in material, entirely personal in execution.
