The Rising Fawn String Ensemble (Rounder 0122) was released in 1979. The ensemble is a trio: Norman Blake on guitar, Nancy Blake on cello and James Bryan on fiddle. Norman Blake also plays fiddle, mandolin and mandocello on some tracks, and Nancy Blake plays a second mandolin on one; Blake produced the record, and he and Nancy recorded and mixed it with Paul Mufson. Rising Fawn is an unincorporated community in Dade County, in the northwest corner of Georgia, where Blake lives.

Blake is credited with vocals on four tracks: his own “Charlie Gaither” and “Tin Foil and Stone,” the traditional “Handsome Molly” and Uncle Dave Macon’s “Old Ties.” The other tracks include the traditional “Devil Chased Me Around the Stump,” a medley of “Cherokee Shuffle,” “Opera Reel” and “Over the Waterfall,” Nancy Blake’s “The Promise,” the traditional “Three Ravens,” Norman Blake’s “Jeff Davis” and “Coming Down from Rising Fawn,” and a side-two medley of Buddy Thomas’s “Briarpicker Brown,” Tom Anderson’s “Da Slockit Light” and Ellis Hall’s “Stony Fork.”
