"Rooster," released in 2005 as a self-produced recording by Duluth, Minnesota singer and guitarist Charlie Parr, is a solo country blues record captured in mono in a Duluth warehouse by engineer Tom Herbers using vintage equipment suited to Parr's pre-war aesthetic. Parr plays resonator guitar and open-back banjo throughout, channeling Piedmont and Delta masters — Charley Patton, Reverend Gary Davis, Bukka White, and Mississippi John Hurt — in a spare and unvarnished format. One of his fourth self-released albums before signing with Red House Records later in the decade, "Rooster" is considered among the most raw and authentic documents of his early output. Its intentional primitiveness places it closer to the country blues revival than to the bluegrass tradition.
