Roses in the Snow, released in 1980, is Emmylou Harris's most explicitly bluegrass-oriented album and one of the most carefully realized acoustic records of its era. Harris assembled a cast that included Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Johnny Cash's son John Carter Cash, and Albert Lee to render a set of songs — including Paul Simon's "The Boxer" and traditional gospel — with startling purity and instrumental precision. The album arrived at a moment when Harris was helping to define what country music could be for listeners who felt the mainstream had drifted too far from its roots, and its influence on subsequent artists — from Alison Krauss to Gillian Welch — was substantial. The title track became one of Harris's most celebrated recordings.
