Running Wild is the third and final studio album by the quartet of Tony Rice (guitar), Larry Rice (mandolin, vocals), Chris Hillman (mandolin, bass, vocals), and Herb Pedersen (banjo, guitar, vocals), released October 2001 on Rounder Records (11661-0483-2). Produced by the group and engineer Bill Wolf at Bias Recording in Springfield, Virginia, it adds Jay Dee Maness (pedal steel), Fred Travers (dobro), Rickie Simpkins (fiddle), Ronnie Simpkins (bass), and Robbie Magruder (drums)—a slightly fuller production than its predecessors. Pedersen called it "the best one we've done." The series that began with Out of the Woodwork (Rounder, 1997) closes here in a document of California string-band refinement that stands among the more quietly accomplished reunion projects of its era.
