Sacred Songs of Life and the Hereafter (Starday Records SLP-315, 1965) is a studio album from Carl Story and His Rambling Mountaineers, recorded in Nashville and presenting an all-gospel program from the North Carolina singer known as the "Father of Bluegrass Gospel." Story plays guitar and sings lead; Frank "Bud" Brewster plays banjo; William "Willie" Brewster plays mandolin; Jack "Hoss" Linneman plays resonator guitar; Tommy Jackson plays fiddle; and Claude Boone holds the bass. The Brewster brothers were regular members of the Rambling Mountaineers, and session fiddler Tommy Jackson adds his smooth Nashville tone to the traditional bluegrass gospel framework. Story's Starday recordings of the mid-1960s represent the fullest expression of his gospel identity as a recording artist, and this album stands as one of the most direct statements of the hard-bluegrass sacred idiom he helped define.
