Screams from the Holler (Spring Fed Records, 2012) is a studio album from the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, the Smithville, Tennessee-based ensemble led by old-time banjo player and showman Leroy Troy. Troy plays banjo, jug, jawbone, washboard, and kazoo and sings throughout; Mike Armistead plays rhythm guitar and sings; Dan Kelly plays fiddle and mandolin; Mike Webb plays dobro and banjo; and Ernie Sykes plays bass and sings. The band's repertoire spans jug-band material, hokum songs, vaudeville novelties, and Tennessee fiddle tunes, delivered with the broad humor and theatrical energy that Troy had cultivated over decades of performing in the Upper Cumberland region. The album captures the ensemble's blend of genuine musical skill and entertainment sensibility, connecting the old-time comedy tradition to a living performing context.
