Shades of the Past is a 1988 album by Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers—Hot Rize's western swing and 1950s-country alter ego—released on Sugar Hill Records (SH 3767), recorded at Colorado Sound Recording in Westminster, Colorado. The four Hot Rize members perform under character names: Tim O'Brien as Red Knuckles (guitar, vocals), Nick Forster as Wendell Mercantile (electric guitar), Pete Wernick as Waldo Otto (steel guitar), and Charles Sawtelle as Slade (bass). They are augmented by the real H.S. "Buck" White of Buck White and the Down Home Folks—appearing as "White Knuckles" on piano—and by Sam Bush as a credited guest. The repertoire draws on western swing, Texas honky-tonk, and 1950s country radio fare, from Ernest Tubb to Hank Thompson.
