Shine Hallelujah Shine Vol. 3 (Hay Holler HHH-C 203, circa 1993) is the third volume in a bluegrass gospel series on the Hay Holler label, gathering prominent players from the Washington, D.C.–area acoustic community for an all-acoustic sacred program. Dudley Connell and David McLaughlin — veterans of the Johnson Mountain Boys — join Blaine Sprouse, Butch Robins, Larry Stephenson, Rob McCoury, and Ronnie Simpkins in a lineup that reads as a partial roster of the mid-Atlantic bluegrass scene at one of its most productive periods. The Hay Holler series reflects the label's dual commitment to traditional bluegrass and its gospel strand, and the cast assembled for Vol. 3 gives the record the character of informal documentary — accomplished players convening to record material they believed in, without commercial constraint or the pressure of a formal ensemble identity.
