Reno and Smiley Sing a Bluegrass Tribute to Cowboy Copas (King 914) was recorded on 16 and 17 March 1964 at King Recording Studio in Cincinnati and released that October. Copas, born in Blue Creek, Ohio, had recorded for King Records and died on 5 March 1963 in the plane crash near Camden, Tennessee, that also killed Patsy Cline and Hawkshaw Hawkins.
The band is credited as Don Reno, Red Smiley and the Tennessee Cut-Ups: Red Smiley on guitar and lead vocal, Don Reno on banjo and tenor, Ronnie Reno on mandolin, Mack Magaha on fiddle, Sid Campbell on rhythm guitar and John Palmer on bass. The album has thirteen tracks. “There Ain’t Nobody Gonna Miss Me,” “Too Many Teardrops” and “Goodbye, Sweetheart, Goodbye” are credited to Copas, and “Tragic Romance” to Grandpa Jones. The album closes with “Talking Tribute to Cowboy Copas,” spoken by Smiley and Reno. The partnership ended in November 1964, a month after the album came out.
