Sing a Bluegrass Tribute to Cowboy Copas (King Records 914) is a tribute studio album from Don Reno and Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley and the Tennessee Cut-Ups, presenting material associated with the Muskogee, Oklahoma-born country vocalist Lloyd "Cowboy" Copas — whose death in the 1963 Patsy Cline plane crash ended one of country music's most consistent recording careers — in bluegrass ensemble treatment. Reno plays banjo and sings; Smiley plays guitar and sings lead; Mack Magaha plays fiddle; Ronnie Reno plays mandolin; John Palmer holds the bass; and Sid Campbell contributes additional work. The tribute format allowed Reno and Smiley to demonstrate their fluency in the mainstream country repertoire while applying their ensemble's hard-driving bluegrass approach to material that occupied the commercial country radio mainstream.
