Sing Me Back Home: The DC Tapes, 1965-1969

Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard

Album · 2018 · Dirt CD 0087

Sing Me Back Home: The DC Tapes, 1965-1969, the 2018 Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard release, compiles early live recordings from the duo's years on the Washington D.C. folk and bluegrass scene. Dickens and Gerrard were among the first women to claim full authorship within the bluegrass tradition, and their partnership, built on Dickens's hard-edged West Virginia vocal style and Gerrard's more folk-inflected approach, produced a sound that stood apart from the male-dominated ensembles around them. No Hard Times, the tracked selection, is representative of the duo's engagement with working-class and labor-movement themes that distinguished their repertoire from mainstream bluegrass of the period. These archival recordings document a formative chapter in both women's careers and in the broader folk-bluegrass crossover scene.
