Jean Ritchie's Singing the Traditional Songs of Her Kentucky Mountain Family came out on Elektra in 1952, early enough that the folk revival it helped feed had barely started. Ritchie sings unaccompanied or with her own dulcimer, and the material is exactly what the title says: ballads, hymns and singing games carried down through the Ritchies of Viper, in Perry County, Kentucky, rather than learned from records. "Jubilee," the play-party her community knew as "Swing and Turn," is among them. The record established her as the tradition's most articulate carrier, a role she kept for sixty years through the Folkways sessions, the Newport stages and her own writing about where the songs came from.
