The Maddox Brothers and Rose were a California-based family act whose recordings for Four Star Records in the late 1940s had established them as among the most energetic and idiosyncratic performers in West Coast country music. The family — Alabama natives who had migrated to California during the Depression — built a following on their live performances and radio work before becoming one of Four Star's most recorded acts. When they moved to Columbia Records in the early 1950s, they brought a performing style that blended honky-tonk, western swing, gospel, and an emerging rockabilly energy that placed them ahead of many of their contemporaries.

The two gospel singles from their Columbia period — "I Just Steal Away and Pray" / "I'd Rather Have Jesus" (1952) and "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown" / "Just Over the Stars" (1955) — reflect the family's longstanding practice of recording sacred material alongside their secular work. Gospel had been part of their repertoire from the beginning, and their approach to it carried the same high-energy delivery they brought to their country and novelty material. Rose Maddox's voice, already one of the most powerful and idiosyncratic in California country, gave the gospel recordings a fervent quality that distinguished them from more polished contemporary renditions.

The Maddox Brothers and Rose dissolved as a working group in the mid-1950s, after which Rose Maddox pursued a solo career. Their Columbia recordings, including both the secular and gospel sides, document a family act at full creative force — one whose influence on rockabilly and early rock and roll has been increasingly recognized by music historians examining the roots of the genre in West Coast country music.
