Johnny Cash arrived at Sun Records in Memphis in 1955, auditioning for Sam Phillips with Luther Perkins on electric guitar and Marshall Grant on upright bass. Phillips signed the trio, and their first release established what became known almost immediately as the boom-chicka-boom sound: Perkins playing a muted, repeating guitar figure while Grant anchored the bottom with steady bass walks. The Tennessee Two's deliberate simplicity was not a limitation but an aesthetic — a rhythmic pulse that gave Cash's baritone a wide, uncluttered space to inhabit.

The Sun period produced a sequence of singles that moved between country, rockabilly, and gospel without fully belonging to any of them. "Folsom Prison Blues" / "So Doggone Lonesome," released in 1955, gave Cash his first significant chart success and introduced the prison narrative that would become one of his signature subjects. "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," which coupled with "Big River" in 1957, demonstrated his ability to cross over toward pop audiences while retaining the stripped Tennessee Two arrangement underneath.

Cash recorded for Sun until 1958, releasing a concentrated body of singles that constituted one of the most coherent early catalogs in American popular music. The collaboration between Cash, Perkins, and Grant produced a sound so immediately recognizable that it required no embellishment — no drums, no additional instrumentation in the earliest recordings, only the interplay between voice, guitar, and bass. When Cash moved to Columbia Records, the sound expanded, but the Sun singles remain the foundational documents of his artistic identity and among the most influential recordings in the history of country and rockabilly music.
