Johnny Cash was an Arkansas-born singer, guitarist, and songwriter whose Carter Family marriage, lifetime of old-time and folk repertoire, and Highwaymen / "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" / "American Recordings" projects placed him at the center of country music's connection to bluegrass and Appalachian tradition for half a century.
- Born February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas; raised in Dyess, Arkansas; died September 12, 2003 in Nashville.
- Married June Carter in 1968, marrying directly into the first family of country and old-time music — the Carter Family — and performed with June, Anita, and Helen Carter on numerous projects.
- Featured on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's landmark "Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two" (1989), singing "Life's Railway to Heaven" alongside June, Anita, and Helen Carter, with Earl Scruggs on banjo.
- Frequent collaborator and friend of Earl Scruggs; appeared together on multiple roots-music projects bridging country and bluegrass.
- Co-founded country supergroup The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, releasing three albums between 1985 and 1995.
- His career-long embrace of Carter Family repertoire kept old-time and bluegrass-adjacent material in mainstream country radio rotation for decades.
- The American Recordings series with Rick Rubin (1994–2010) drew heavily on traditional and roots material that intersects with the bluegrass canon.
- Inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Songwriters Halls of Fame; widely cited as a bridge figure between mainstream country and Appalachian/bluegrass traditions.
