My Mother's Hymn Book, released in 2004 on American/Lost Highway (B0001986-02), is Johnny Cash's spare gospel record — fifteen old hymns he had learned from his mother Carrie growing up in Dyess, Arkansas. Cash sings and plays acoustic guitar entirely solo, with no other musicians, no overdubs. Rick Rubin produced, with John Carter Cash associate producing. Most tracks were cut in Rubin's earliest 1993-94 American Recordings sessions; Cash, in the liner notes, called it his favorite album he ever made. The record was originally released as Disc 4 of the Unearthed box in 2003, then issued standalone in 2004, where it reached No. 9 on Billboard's Christian albums chart. The session is one of the rawest documents of Cash's late-career singing.
