Wildwood Flower was June Carter Cash’s fourth and final album. It was recorded between October 2002 and March 2003 and produced by her son John Carter Cash, and Dualtone released it on 9 September 2003, four months after her death on 15 May and a few days before the death of her husband Johnny Cash, who sings on it.
Most of the thirteen tracks are songs from the Carter Family repertoire: “Keep on the Sunny Side,” “Storms Are on the Ocean,” “Sinking in the Lonesome Sea,” “Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone” and the title song, which the Carter Family first recorded for Victor in 1928. Her mother, Maybelle Carter, performed with A. P. and Sara Carter. June also sings her own “Big Yellow Peaches” and, with Johnny, “The Road to Kaintuck” and “Temptation.” Norman Blake plays guitar on the album and Nancy Blake cello and mandolin; Laura Cash plays fiddle and guitar, Dennis Crouch bass, and Carlene Carter and Lorrie Carter Bennett are among the backing singers.
The album won two Grammy Awards in 2004, Best Traditional Folk Album and, for “Keep On the Sunny Side,” Best Female Country Vocal Performance. It reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums chart and No. 33 on the Top Country Albums chart.
