Unearthed

Johnny Cash

Album · 2003

Unearthed is a five-disc box set released on 25 November 2003, two months after Johnny Cash’s death, on American Recordings and Lost Highway. Rick Rubin produced it, and it draws on the sessions the two worked on together from 1993 to 2002. It runs to seventy-nine tracks. The first three discs, Who’s Gonna Cry, Trouble in Mind and Redemption Songs, hold outtakes and alternate versions of songs from the four American albums, among them “Long Black Veil,” “Banks of the Ohio,” “Heart of Gold” and “Redemption Song.”

The fourth disc, My Mother’s Hymn Book, is fifteen hymns that Cash had first learned from his mother, among them “I’ll Fly Away,” “In the Garden” and “Softly and Tenderly.” He sang them with only his own guitar; of the finished recording he said, “Me and the guitar, and that’s all there was in it.” It was later issued on its own in 2004. The fifth disc gathers fifteen tracks from the American albums, from “Delia’s Gone” to “Hurt.”
