American III: Solitary Man is a 2000 American Recordings release by Johnny Cash, the third entry in his celebrated series with producer Rick Rubin, recorded at Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Cash's voice carries the full weight of his declining health across stripped-down interpretations: Neil Diamond's title track won the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, while Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" (with Petty on vocals and organ), Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat," Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "I See a Darkness," and U2's "One" share a preoccupation with mortality and perseverance. Guest appearances from June Carter Cash, Merle Haggard, and Sheryl Crow add color to what is among the most emotionally direct albums of Cash's final decade.
