The Earl Scruggs Revue's Volume II, released on Columbia Records (PC 34090) in 1976, is the second studio album from Earl Scruggs's electrified band—formed after his 1969 split with Lester Flatt—which featured his sons Gary (bass, harmonica) and Randy (electric and acoustic guitars) and courted the rock festival circuit. Guests include Roger McGuinn (12-string guitar), Billy Joel (piano), Alvin Lee and Tony Joe White (guitar), Pete Drake (steel guitar), and Johnny Cash—who contributes guitar and vocals on two tracks. Note: catalog personnel also lists Paul Harrigill, a contemporary musician with no documented connection to the 1976 recording; the entry is almost certainly a data error. Produced by Bob Johnston, the album represents Scruggs's most sustained engagement with rock-era production aesthetics.
