The Lilly Brothers — Everett and Bea Lilly — grew up in Clear Creek, West Virginia, in a musical tradition rooted in old-time string band playing and shape-note gospel. Their partnership with banjoist Don Stover, a fellow West Virginian, carried that tradition northward when the group relocated to Boston in the early 1950s. There they became the house band at the Hillbilly Ranch, a club on Stuart Street that served the city's Appalachian migrant community and, in time, drew a broader audience of folk revival enthusiasts who had never previously encountered live bluegrass.

Their two Event Records singles, both released in 1957, document the group at the height of their Boston period. "Tragic Romance" / "Are You Tired of Me, My Darling" (Event E 4261) and "John Henry" / "Bring Back My Blue Eyed Boy to Me" (Event E 4272) reflect the repertoire they had honed at the Hillbilly Ranch — a mix of traditional ballads, early bluegrass standards, and material drawn from the Appalachian canon they had grown up with. The recordings are spare and direct, built around close brother harmony and Stover's bluegrass banjo work.

The Lilly Brothers and Don Stover occupy a singular place in the music's broader history as the act most responsible for establishing a bluegrass presence in New England during the 1950s. Their residency at the Hillbilly Ranch introduced the genre to audiences that would later become active participants in the folk and bluegrass revival movements of the 1960s, and their Event singles stand as the primary recorded documentation of what that Boston-period sound actually was.
