Skip, Hop and Wobble (Sugar Hill SH-C 3817, 1993) brings together guitarist Russ Barenberg, dobro player Jerry Douglas, and bassist Edgar Meyer for eleven tracks that move fluidly between bluegrass, swing, old-time, and chamber-influenced instrumental writing. Barenberg's precise flat-picked guitar, Douglas's resonant dobro playing, and Meyer's classically trained bass technique complement each other with precision and wit; the trio's pacing — from romping breakdowns to introspective ballads — produced something genuinely new in the acoustic music world. The three musicians had crossed paths on Nashville recording sessions throughout the 1980s, and this album represents the first time they worked together as equal principals rather than sidemen. It set a template for the genre-blurring acoustic trio format that others would follow in the decade ahead.
