Smokey and the Bandit: Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (MCA Records MCA-2099, 1977) presents the music from Hal Needham's massively successful comedy-action film, with Jerry Reed supplying the vocal tracks and Bill Justis composing and arranging the instrumental score. Reed plays guitar and sings throughout, including "East Bound and Down" — written by Reed and Dick Feller and the film's signature theme — as well as "The Legend," "The Bandit," and "West Bound and Down." Justis, the Sun Records alumnus who wrote "Raunchy" in 1957, contributed a brassy uptempo score alongside the vocal tracks, with Bobby Thompson's five-string banjo featured prominently on "East Bound and Down." The soundtrack's commercial success — "East Bound and Down" reached number two on the Billboard country chart — cemented Reed's reputation as both a film actor and a recording artist at the peak of his popularity.
