Somewhere Between was released in 2004 on Mountain Home (MH 0996-2) by NewFound Road. Guitarist and lead singer Tim Shelton formed the band after leaving the southern Ohio gospel group the Beacons, recruiting a fellow former Beacon, bassist Tim Caudill, along with banjo player Junior Williams and mandolinist Rob Baker. NewFound Road began as a bluegrass gospel group, and this was its first album that was not all gospel, although four of its twelve tracks are gospel songs. It was recorded at Crossroads Studios in Arden, North Carolina.

Shelton sings lead on most of the tracks, with Williams on tenor and Baker on baritone. Jim VanCleve, the album’s only guest, plays fiddle on ten of the twelve tracks. Shelton later said that the album’s opening song, “It’s Raining the Blues” (written by Darren McGuire), topped the Bluegrass Unlimited chart and was the band’s first number one.

Members of the band wrote several of the songs: Caudill the title track and “Love at First Light,” Baker “Don’t Be Gone,” and Shelton the instrumental “Edinburgh.” The covers include Tom T. Hall’s “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” Larry Sparks’s “These Old Blues,” Judy Marshall’s “I Need You Lord” and Patsy Osborne’s “Jesus Sure Changed Me.” “Rock of Ages” is sung a cappella.
