Songlines: Top of the World 179 is the free compilation CD that came with the July 2022 issue of Songlines, the world-music magazine published since 1999. Each issue’s Top of the World disc draws tracks from new albums the magazine has chosen. This one has ten tracks plus five bonus tracks: Sonny Singh, Vieux Farka Touré, Lily Henley and the Canny Band among the ten, and Bellowhead’s “Parson’s Farewell” and the Master Musicians of Jajouka among the bonus tracks. Simon Broughton, Olivia Cheves and Spencer Grady compiled it.

Track nine is “Cuckoo Bird” by Sam Shackleton, an Edinburgh-based Scottish singer who plays clawhammer banjo, guitar and harmonica. It comes from his debut album, Causeway Recordings, released in March 2022, which he recorded himself in his flat in Causewayside, Edinburgh. “Cuckoo Bird” is one of three traditional songs on that album, along with “House Carpenter” and “Gambling Davey.” Shackleton rearranged all three and changed some of their verses.
