Songs From the Homeplace

Jim & Jesse

Album · 1998 · Pinecastle PRC 1082

Songs from the Homeplace (Pinecastle Records PRC-1082, 1998) is a studio album from Jim and Jesse McReynolds, recorded at Studio By The Pound in Hendersonville, Tennessee, in 1984 and released fourteen years later on Pinecastle. Jim McReynolds plays guitar and sings; Jesse McReynolds plays mandolin and sings; Carl Jackson plays guitar and fiddle and sings, also producing the album; Allen Shelton plays dobro; and Scott Blevins holds the bass. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album in 1999, bringing critical attention to a recording that had long remained in the brothers' personal archive. Jackson's production gives the sessions a warmth that complements the McReynolds' close-harmony approach, and Shelton's dobro connects the sound to the brother-duet tradition the instrument long accompanied in the Virginia bluegrass world.
