Solo: Songs My Dad Loved is a 2009 album by Ricky Skaggs released on Skaggs Family Records (SFR-901009), a genuine solo project in the strictest sense: Skaggs sang every vocal part and played every instrument himself, overdubbing all tracks at his Skaggs Place Studios in Nashville. The instrument list is extensive—mandolin, octave mandolin, mandocello, fiddle, banjo, acoustic guitar, baritone guitar, resonator guitar, acoustic bass, piano, and percussion. The repertoire pays tribute to his father, Hobert Skaggs, who first placed a mandolin in Ricky's hands as a child in eastern Kentucky. The songs are mostly public-domain pieces associated with the Monroe Brothers, the Stanley Brothers, and the early bluegrass canon, presented here without accompaniment in an intimate document of Skaggs's deepest roots.
