Songs of Glory cover

Songs of Glory, released by Columbia Records in March 1960 (CL 1424), is one of the early Flatt and Scruggs gospel-bluegrass LPs — twelve sacred numbers cut with the Foggy Mountain Boys at the duo's classic mid-period configuration. The program opens with When the Angels Carry Me Home and gathers traditional spirituals and four-part quartet pieces like Angel Band and Give Me Flowers While I'm Living, all delivered in the high-energy acoustic style the Columbia years had locked into place. Flatt's rhythm guitar and lead vocals share the front with Earl Scruggs's banjo, and the sacred material gave Columbia a way to market the band to the churchgoing audiences who had embraced bluegrass gospel as part of the postwar Southern record-buying habit.
