"Songs of the West," released in 1994 on Warner Bros. Records, is a thematic compilation drawn from eight of Emmylou Harris's previous studio albums released between 1975 and 1992, curated around western-flavored material from her Hot Band and Nash Ramblers years. No new recordings are included. Released the same year as her fully acoustic studio album "Cowgirl's Prayer," the compilation highlights a western and cowgirl imagery strand that had run consistently through Harris's country and folk work from the beginning of her recording career. For listeners new to her catalog, it serves as a useful thematic introduction to her Warner period alongside the more comprehensive "Portraits" box set released two years later.
