Stanley Sound Around the World

Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys

Album · 1973 · King Bluegrass KB 522

Stanley Sound Around the World documents Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys on an international tour in the early 1970s, capturing a working band in the repertoire they performed nightly — a combination of classic Stanley Brothers material, gospel, and hard-driving traditional bluegrass. "Poison Love," a Johnnie and Jack song that had long been part of the bluegrass and country repertoire, illustrates the Stanley band's ability to deliver emotionally direct performances without ornament. International touring was still relatively unusual for bluegrass acts at this point, and the album is a document of the genre's reach beyond its American regional base. Ralph's singing — modal, severe, and deeply rooted in the church music of his Virginia upbringing — is as distinctive here as on any of his studio recordings.
